Is anyone riding, working their horse?

Postby Joan Deutsch on Mon Dec 28, 2009 1:12 pm

The best I've been able to do is get out on the trails a couple of times a week -- but then the ground froze again. I was determined not to let that break my streak so on Saturday I rode Cody on the trails. But when he started slipping and sliding, I promptly turned around and headed home. There, I went back to chores and proceeded to slip and fall on a steep hill, hitting my shoulder pretty hard. That means I'm out of commission for a while. Mike doesn't really have the time to pick up all of my chores so I'm hoping to be fully operational and back in the saddle soon. I had major shoulder surgery several years ago, so I'm happy to report this was my other shoulder. I'm SO glad this wasn't horse-related!

Joan - Hope you're feeling better soon!
We just returned from Christmas on the east coast and are planning on riding New Years Day. It's a nice way to start the year.

The trails are starting to thaw so the traction is better. Hope you guys have good weather for your New Year's rides.

Cassy, Do you know how many have registered for your ride?

Trails, Do you know which trail system you're going to?

Bummer about your shoulder, Joan, I hope it isn't anything major!

Looks like I'm on the rail 'til the trails dry out, much as I hate to admit it. Being w/o a trailer I can't haul to dryer trail areas, and the pasture and trail at my barn are pretty much soaked and Slippery City 'til spring. Bummer. Oh well, riding in an arena isn't as bad as not riding at all!

How is your shoulder? I hope nothing permanent? I am not riding, we don't have good footing here and my arena area is a sloppy mess when it isn't frozen up with frost heaves. I just work on ground manners and things that don't require me on board, Casey is so green that he still has problems with balance and my weight too...I can't really even lunge safely in the yard due to the ground being so muddy and soft-if possible and the weather holds or gets a bit better we will try for a walk down the road.Such is the price for living in our beautiful N.W.
Like Mary K I don't have a trailer to go somewhere else and here in East Lewis County I don't even think there is a covered arena night!

Oh, Joan, I'm so sorry to hear about your shoulder. I hope it heals quickly and isn't too painful. It's so slick out there.

I don't ride (nothing big enough to ride), but I drive and have been driving most every day recently up the road and around the yard. Those are the only places dry enough. I wish I had better options for places to drive, but no trailer here either. Today was a fun ride, as Fred decided to bolt when he saw the horses down the street in a NEW pasture. He had seen them many times before in their old pasture...

I think I'm going to hitch Katie for the first time this week if it stays dry. After 5 months of groundwork she's ready. I hope the weather doesn't turn.

Well I've been out of town since the 23rd and won't be home until the 3rd so I'm not riding my horses BUT I DID go for a verrrrrrry cold ride TODAY :-) It was 6 degrees this morning at 7:30am when I headed out the door and met up with some friends near Sandpoint, ID and saddled up & hit the trails at about 9:30am this morning and rode their 500 acres... What a COOOLD but very fun time!

I got to ride my friends new Arab Stallion the brought over from Germany 4 months ago, he's a total sweetheart and was a blast to ride and one of the most sure footed horses I've been on because there were icy spots and some snow (nothing really deep) on the ground and he never missed a step. He's barefoot but they run barium shoes in the winter on their horses that have to be kept shod, apparently gives them a lot better traction on the frozen ground.
It sure is pretty country in North Idaho and I would give anything to have 500 acres of my own to ride around... (sighs with envy, lol).

My own horses are probably thrilled I'm not home to be torturing, errr, riding them, lolol.

Joan, Hope your shoulder is 100% soon, I slipped on the ice when we we had the frozen rain a few weeks back up in Bellingham, and fell flat on my back and buggered my left shoulder a bit, a few trips to the chiropractor thankfully seemed to really bring relief.

Yeah, no rest for the weary... but then, the barn my horse is at has an indoor arena so it's harder to make excuses. (Now, if it was a *heated* indoor arena, then I'd REALLY have no way to make excuses!) Haven't gotten to a trail in a little while, but hopefully the weather will cooperate and I'll be able to do that again soon.

I hope your shoulder feels better, Joan! Wouldn't it have been better to be able to say it was at least horse-related? To me, it would be...

We've been on a couple of trail rides that we hauled in to. The Morgan Club parking lot was open even while Bracken was closed and we were there on Christmas Eve.

Cody pulling his shoe has put a bit of a crimp in my style as I don't want to ride him down the road and over the big rocks to the trails at Fish Creek Farm yet, even with his Easyboots. Oh well, we're pretty much just trail riders anyway. We'd like to hook up with someone that could give us a joint lesson at an indoor one night a week, but so far no great recommendations for the Marysville - Stanwood area.

We're planning on the Trailduster New Year's day ride Friday and I may try to sneak in a trip down the road on Thursday too.
