How to copy Desktop from old HD to new...?
Hello,
After updating my antivirus from AVG2012 to AVG2013 (free version), my system crashed the first time I attempted to run XXCLONE to do a backup. I suspect there is some interference between this program and the new version of AVG, as I had been doing this regularly with AG2012 with no problem.
Fortunately, I was able to restore the system from a month-old XXCLONE backup on a new HD, by copying most of my data directories from the old HD. However, I've lost some stuff from the missing month, most importantly some shortcuts on the desktop. I expect there is a file somewhere in the Windows guts of the system that puts those up there (hopefully in the original positions), but I have no idea where to find it. I would like to simply copy the entire desktop from the old HD to the new. Is this possible....? If so, how...?
The crash seems totally within the Windows software (Win XP SP-3), as the computer runs normally on the month-old backup in the new HD, and I can access the old HD normally with Windows Explorer, but cannot boot from it.
Any help much appreciated...!

Have you tried a different cloning application? Clonezilla (which is open source), for example.

The Desktop information is stored at C:\Users\YOURUSERID\Desktop
Where YOURUSERID is the alias which you log in.
You should be able to simple copy that from one system to another and have your desktop back.
Which OS?
