Cancelled Shows Due to EHV-1

Postby 4h-mom on Wed May 18, 2011 3:49 pm

So far I've heard that Hollywood Hills Riding Club in Woodinville, WA, has cancelled their gaming show for 5-22 but is still holding their dressage show 5-21. The reasoning being that the gamers frequently travel out of state and so far the only horses known to be affected are stock horses.

Washington State Horse Park has also cancelled their fun ride 5-22.

I expect to see more cancellations more horses test positive in the area.

People have gone dumb panic over this they are stopping any poker prize ride in some counties. only the horses that where in Ogden Utah at the show are at risk as well as the stable mates and pasture buddies of those horses. People that go to those big shows don't go camping in the forest with that horse or any horse they don't want it hurt on a stick or to get lost and it is too blanketed and primped to be in the forest.

You would be surprised at the kind of people that trail ride. Most of the people in my daughter's dressage barn do and a couple even do prize rides. Also, a lot of people come from multi-discipline barns and a lot of arenas hold multi-discipline events. A lot of gamers and reiners hang out at the same venues as cutters, and a lot of them travel out of state. We live on a dead end road that has normally has a huge amount of trailer traffic. (We have gamers and a farrier who takes haulins on our road.) My daughter just realized yesterday that nearly all of that has stopped this week.

Just received this email:

The Washington State Horse Park is NOT cancelling their weekend events after consulting the professionals:

Horse Park management is closely monitoring developments in the outbreak of EHV-1 among some cutting horses that recently attended a competition in Ogden, Utah. We are in touch daily with the State Veterinarian in Olympia, WSU in Pullman, and Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital in Snohomish. While these 3 sources urge caution, they note that no new cases have been identified outside the cutting horses that were in Utah.

At this point these sources consider the risks manageable and have not recommended that events be cancelled. These experts do urge horse owners be on the alert for any possible symptoms, especially fever, and act promptly to limit contact and get medical care if illness is suspected.

The Drill Team competition on Sat. May 21 is taking place. The organizer of the Fun Ride on Sun. cancelled by due to low entries. The Park won't stabling on the property until after the 22nd except for those in the Drill Team event. From Friday through Sunday we plan to have day users in a separate area from Drill Team competitors to limit interaction. More information will be posted based on further developments.

What's the recommendation on trail riding? Has anyone suggested we avoid trails?

Snohomish County 4H (and I believe the whole state) has cancelled all horse related events until June 11.
The Farwest Appaloosa Show on 5-22 at Stanwood Equestrian Center has also been cancelled.

The River Run Ranch in Castle Rock has cancelled their schooling show tomorrow but not their tack sale.
The hubby and I are heading down in the am to try for a saddle for Sully.

The L'Aperitif dressage show at Bridle Trails tomorrow (May 22) has been canceled - the E.I. website says all riders have been notified.
