Joan Deutsch wrote:We actually haven't had an odor since we added new gravel last fall. It usually takes awhile for the aroma to re-surface after we add new footing. That's an interesting point about the rain washing away the odor, because I hadn't noticed that in the past. Does anyone have a urine odor now? Can't wait to try the new EM-1, though. It says to apply with a watering can or any sprayer.
Cassy, glad to hear the baking soda worked. Someone had told me that it would take a tremendous amount but sounds like that's not the case?
just a small box in one stall that doesn't seem like a tremendous amount to me.

Re: reducing paddock smell
We use 'Stall-Dry' (thanks again Joan!) inside of the run-in shed, but don't want to use it on the gravel as that would pretty much be like adding sand to gravel...might get mucky. The Stall-Dry works great for neutrizing urine smell. Our problem areas are outside of the shed in the large gravel areas, thus the curiosity about the EM1.

Re: reducing paddock smell
Anyone else have puddles in their paddocks that smell bad? Ours are filled with green and red slim. I'm hoping next weekend we can fill them in with gravel -- and finally use the microbial spray. GR, How often do you use Bye Bye Odor?

Re: reducing paddock smell
I had gotten some of that BBO from the FlyPred people but have not used it yet. I sure wish my piggy mares would not just pee in and in front of the run in shed. Anybody have a sure fire way to convince mares that they need to pee elsewhere???? Also I have to check the trough daily now, because somebody has decided that pooping in the trough if fun..... OMG... If I catch the culprit, I am going to head out with a swinging rope... That is sooooo not the place. They have not done this before, and is probably because the kids feed them there... AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!

Re: reducing paddock smell
We use the BBO every day Joan. When we shovel out a pee spot of bedding, we leave it for a few minutes to dry in the open (the spot on the mat) then after everything is mucked out, we go through and spray all of those spots (usually about 6-8) then rake them over with surrounding bedding. We also spray the areas in between mats (where they meet up, but are always full of bedding) and some of the outside obvious pee areas. If it sounds like we go through a lot of bbo, you would be right. About one bottle (which we mix to 3 gallons of water) a week. Can't help it though- the difference after spraying the bbo is amazing! We don't have any puddles, green, red, or otherwise in our gravel...knock on wood.

Lune, Our mare poops in her trough, too. She likes to rest and sleep while backed up to the water tank!

GR, I'm glad the BBO is working but that's too bad it has to be used daily. Can you mix a big batch so you don't have to make some every day?

Re: reducing paddock smell
No, we don't mix it everyday. We mix one batch in a 3 gallon container that lasts about a week or a little more. One 4 oz. bottle to 3 gallons water.

Re: reducing paddock smell
There are several threads on dealing with odor from horse urine. Thought I'd add this sale info to the largest thread. We've had good luck with EM-1. Their website lists sale prices now: one quart, $19.75; one gallon is $51.50. We've only used about a third of a quart in 3 months. I mix one ounce with water in a 2-gallon sprayer and it's lasted up to several weeks.

Re: reducing paddock smell
Hey Joan, how much EM1 do you mix to how much water? The web page says 1:1000 but I'm having the hard time figuring out the math for a 2 gallon sprayer or watering can... ? I've got to do something though, the boys like to pee in the same 3 spots every time and with the lack of rain the odor is getting overwhelming. I'm sure the neighbor (whose house is closer to the barn than ours) would like me to do something about it...
