How to get more hooves on the trail?

Postby Joan Deutsch on Tue Feb 26, 2013 3:22 pm

There are foot races, Orienteer events and now bike races in Lord Hill Park. In the interest in keeping the trail open to horses, does anyone have ideas for horse events that could be held in this woodland trail system that's about 11 miles long? What about ACTHA, Mounted Orienteering, poker rides, etc? Is anyone involved in any horse activity that would be interested in scheduling an event in the park? During special events, the county opens up the lot on the south side of the park that has more parking than the equestrian lot on the north side.

If I was on that side of the big salty pond I would set one up a poker ride or competitive trail course.

This is an issue that impacts many of our parks. I would suggest starting a "club" that organizes rides on a set schedule, say two days a week. Once the word gets out, others can join you.

The thing that bothers me about ACTHA and CMOs and the other rides is they charge so much money to do things you can do by yourself for free. Sure, some people are into riding in large groups of horses and standing around waiting for other people to finish an obstacle. At least if you go to a show you can earn points that can increase your horse's value in the future.

I'd rather just ride for a couple of hours and then have a potluck or go home and let the horses eat lunch.

some breed registries do recognize competitive trail events such as actha and you can get points earned by you and your horse. Some of those trail events they compete for money and huge year end awards. The Arab,APHA and AQHA award trail miles and time in the saddle doing any thing you like and you can accumulate points towards awards year end. I personally ride a 10k valued horse exclusively on trails and in trail competitions. Both her and I have gathered a few hundred trail miles. she also has 20 hours of police horse training and is registered in a nation data base as having done them. the trail ride groups that put on the trail events, such as cmo's,competitive trail, endurance rides all have year end awards for accumulated points, things such as saddles, horse trailers, blankets, etc.they also have stricter rules about medications, drugs and gear for the horse and rider.

I agree. The rides are expensive. And for me, the closest rides are about a two hour drive, which equates to a minimum of 4 hours of driving to ride ~6 miles. Unfortunately, it just doesn't pencil out...

I'm with you Kriss - don't want to drive for 2 hours just to ride for 6 miles. ;)

Each horse has its own specials skill and talents. Points, awards and a price tag don't necessarily make one better than the other. If some people like doing endurance, CMOs and the like, more power to them. I'd rather ride to the top of a mountian, listen to some birds and watch for wildlife.

My ol' man had done everything I've ever asked him to do with the exception of cattle sorting. Aside from being afraid of calves, he knows the job he needs to do and gets it done as efficiently as possible. He honestly can't see the purpose of doing a 360 with his feet inside a hula hoop. LOL When is he ever going to need to know how to do that in real life?

I'd like to see more people moving towards orgainzing trail rides. Snohomish County has the meet up group, Enumclaw area has the Back Country Horsemen, but not much else going on around King County unfortunately.

I would drive the 2 hours but plan on staying there for 3 days riding and camping. I have driven 5 hours to go camping and do a poker ride and stayed for a minimum of 3 days. day rides will drive an hour one way may 2 hours at most just to explore trails and ride for at least 4 hours or more.

I work a full time job, plus 1 weekend every month, so my time is limited and I'm not willing to spend hours driving, when I can walk out my front gate and ride for hours.

I can ride off my property for all day rides too. I just love to see different places and see different sites. I am within 15 minutes drive time of three horse camp grounds, one I can ride to on my horse from my house. I am also within 45 minutes of 4 areas I can go do day rides in also that don't have camp areas. it isn't about how close the ride is or how far it is about the adventure and seeing new places meeting new people and just having a good time. those people who compete on trail events enjoy what they do it is their thing. others like to just go to different places and map them for others. some like to go on poker rides and hope to win a prize they really don't need and some do those ride and donate the things they win to rescues or what ever. I know a group of ladies all they do is go to prize rides and camp ride and spend money and then they turn around and donate every thing they got. it's not about points, increasing your horses value or who's who. it is just about having fun. so go out have fun at what you enjoy.
