I ran across a longtime Lord Hill rider and BCHW member on the trails. I hadn't seen her for quite a while. Unfortunately, the lighting wasn't good in the woods:

Irish draughts are incredibly athletic and make very good eventers. They are bold and powerful with a kind attitude. I know a girl with one and he is a lovely horse, very calm and sweet. She does Preliminary level in eventing last I heard.

Finally got some decent photos of our 2 year old filly, Eve, Friesian Sporthorse. She's looking at a plastic bag my daughter threw up in the air and let drift down. Eve thought it was really cool!

How lucky to get a dry day. We met April and Chris who were riding in Lord Hill Park today.

Two flat cedar logs cross a new trail in the park. Unfortunately there's a space between them where I could picture a hoof getting caught if the horse slipped on the wet wood. Eventually, we can fill this with gravel. In the meantime, would you hesitate to ride across it?

I probably wouldn't have even noticed it. My horses plow through brush where you can't even see the footing to worry about it. They tend to know where there feet are and stay out of trouble (I believe this is a positive side effect of going barefoot).

Kriss, I gotta agree about the advantages of barefoot!

Here's the scene just down the hill from the cedar logs pictured above. We went to check on this new trail in a very wet area to see how it was holding up with all the rain. The culvert is working like a charm. It's a scenic spot as the water rushes out of a beaver pond and through a hollowed out log before it runs into the culvert. I couldn't capture all of that in the picture.

What a beautiful area Joan! When I still lived up in Grays Harbor I rode in the woods like that all the time and I miss it. I like where we are now, but I loved those wooded trails.

Kriss, The forest is fun and full of surprising artwork. I like the old-growth stumps with salal growing out of the top. I envy you riding the range right out of your ranch. And you're riding up hills or mountains, too, where the hoof boots fell apart?

Joan - the woods are so good for the soul. I haven't been out in them lately, hopefully after the New Year.

We lost Digger's companion (he was 28) in May and he was alone all summer. At the beginning of November I got him a girlfriend. He and Mooch are fast friends, and someday she might even decide to let me pet her...



In other news, my trainer moved out to Rhodes River Ranch in Oso, and Bill and I have been testing out the big arena. The one at the previous barn was so small that it seems I'd forgotten how to ride in a straight line...
