So SWEET! Do you have plans for the little guy or are you just kind playing it by ear? Definately looking forward to updates on his progress. Congratulations

I'm kind of playing it by ear.
I have a friend who is into driving her minis. I had a pony as a kid that I trained to drive when I outgrew her for riding. So, getting into driving again would be fun.
He's almost 36" as a yearling, so he'll be able to handle it easily.

How fun! I had a couple different driving ponies as a kid and I really enjoyed it. I would love to have a shetland (one of the old fashioned, stocky ponies, not the long, lean shetlands you tend to see now). Unfortunately, our pasture fence is sort of an "honor-system" fence with just 3 strands of (not)hot wire, and anyone who has had a shetland knows they have no honor where fences are concerned

RNGOVVET, That's so cool of you to buy the little guy. I was wondering how the sale went and have been meaning to ask you. Would love to see more pics!
Do you still have Gerdi? Isn't he a couple shades lighter than her? Wondering if your horses were afraid? I'd love to have a barnyard collection so the horses would be used to their brethren.

All animals sold at the sale, and prices were high. There was a lot of drama surrounding this sale, so Josephine county was able to recoup expenses.
I named the guy Brokk, for a "little person" of Norse mythology. Gerdi is named for a giantess of Norse mythology. And yes, I still have her.
Startling revelation of the week: as I'm handling him more and more, I finally got a look at his teeth. My yearling is going on four years old! Major oops that got transferred onto all his paperwork.
That changes the timeline for getting him started. And for expecting behavior changes. He was just gelded November 19; a yearling would have less testosterone to come down from than a colt cut at three years old.

Rngovvet, What a surprise that the little guy turned out to be so much older than you thought. Were the ages just estimates or was someone trying to mislead? Were your big horses afraid of him at first? How's he getting along?

Ringo - that happened to us, too!
We got a pony a couple of years ago that was supposed to be 2 years old. We were hoping she would get bigger so we could train her and rehome her as a riding horse. Well, once we got her home and looked at her teeth we discovered she was coming five years old. So much for the idea of growing taller! We still have her though, and she is a marvellous trail horse.

I'm thinking it was a paperwork mix-up. I don't think it was intentional. It couldn't have been a mistake checking - the difference between a yearling and a 4-year-old is too obvious. Since the plan to just work on manners and groundwork until he grew up is out the window. I bought him a driving harness so we can start on that.
Realtime - glad your "Plan B" worked out for you!
