Rescues. Who to trust? Another charity folds.

Postby xcape2usa on Fri Dec 14, 2012 8:46 pm

I'm becoming increasingly disheartened with the rescue 'industry'. The more I learn the less I am inclined to give. I will be doing lots of research and background checks from now on before I donate! I know there are honest, above board organizations that can be trusted - it's just a matter of finding them!

Xcape, Thanks so much for posting! I hadn't heard about this but I did know about their troubles. I still think there are some good local horse charities, yes?

Hi Joan, during my research I found a few that operate with questionable policies and goals. However, the good news is that yes, there are also some that rescue with heart and soul - along with full disclosure and open book policy. Pony Up is one such rescue organization! https://www.facebook.com/PonyUpRescue?ref=ts&fref=ts I donated some of my hay nets to them and will gladly give more when I am able to. It would be nice to have a 'local list' of trusted rescues, with folks giving personal experiences, either through their volunteer work or being on the board.
As I find more local organizations or groups, I will be sure to post here! Anyone here have experience with local rescue groups?

Xcape, Thank you for all you do for horses in need!

Hellojet, Are you still involved with SAFE? Anyone else have rescues to recommend?

www.peacefulvalleydonkeyrescue.org they do a nation wide rescue operation and will travel any where to pick up donkeys in need. they are above bored all the way. they also care for over 600 donkeys at the ranch currently and are in need of sat alight centers to help place donkeys in homes. the other one I know of is in shelton wa and it is sunrise rescue.

A friend of mine owns/runs a rescue in Sandy, Oregon called Zebs Wish. It is named after the first mule "Zebediah" that she took in years ago. She has an outstanding volunteer force, a good relationship with the local vet clinic, a wonderful barefoot trim expert (he cares for my horses as well) and a long personal history with her own horses. She keeps her numbers down and doesn't limit her rescues to horses/mules/donkeys. She has taken in goats, chickens, dogs, cats and currently has a ferret. She does a wonderful job of networking to rehome those animals who can move on, and also provides a final resting place (in life and death) to those who can't. She is kind and compasionate and most importantly, knows her limits. Her husband supports her efforts 100%. Zebs Wish has a FB page.

Yup, Pony Up is great. They get my money when I can afford charitable donations.

My daughter helps train some of the SAFE horses. She also does their benefit show every year.
