We had great luck several years ago using Clicker training to get Grace in a trailer. It's been suggested I try that with Joe's cinch issue. Has anyone been using Clicker training or treats with their horse?

We may have never got a hand, or a halter, on Scooter if it hadn't been for treats. I would not normally advocate the use of treats for training, but I also dont want a chase or a fight, so sometimes treats, when the appropriate behaviour has been displayed, is perfectly acceptable, IMHO... Of course, the problem with using treats is that you and the horse can become dependant on them, then what happens if you run out or forget them?

If done properly the horse does not depend on treats they also learn that a good pat or rub is a treat. I am going to suggest learning about the method before you judge it. It never promotes biting or bad behavior if it is done correctly, it is and can be even used on fish to train fish to do things. The reason it is so widely used by zoo's is it works and works well with ANY animal period. If it eats it can be trained this way.

I didn't say anything about clicker training one way or the other. I don't know anything about it. I was talking about treats. As in, the kind of treat a horse eats.

Yeah, I posed a broad question to find out if folks were using treats in any way with horses. I know that hand feeding can create problems so I'm wondering how folks avoid that.

don't give any form of praise,treat,snack for inappropriate behaviors. if they get grabby back away and turn your back on them literally just out of reach so you don't get poked or nipped. when the stop doing the bad and move away or stop being a butt head give the reward.

I use bribes on Diamond for spraying (fly spray or grooming spray) and for shots. She had bad experiences with both, and has a very long memory.

Treats let me accomplish both without a rodeo. I don't heal as well as I used to...

Exactly. Scooter has been our special needs baby from the day he loaded on the trailer. He always will be a bit of a challenge, and he is a big boy. Treats work for him so I use them. Timing is everything, as with any training effort...
