This is the first time this low spot has not drained after a day. Finally, I got a bucket and scooped it all into the wheel barrow. Mike is planning to dig out the French drain and wash the drain rock in the hopes of getting the drain to work again. It would have been a lot easier just to have graded the land before the stalls were built!

I woke up this morning to find the swamp had returned after a heavy rain!

We broke the record rainfall for yesterday's date in Seattle and our paddocks are showing it. Even though, I pick up manure, the gravel is mushy and not draining real well. How's your drainage?

We cleared out the French drains but water is still pooling up around the run-in shed.


I guess the next step is replacing the old with new gravel.

Not bad. I keep clearing my mini-trenches to keep the walking area free of puddles. I love that I have 18" of slag as the paddock substrate!

I hate mud.

We put hoofgrid down in all the paddock and in high traffic areas. 2nd year and no real mud yet!

Easy Goin, Did you put gravel on top of the HoofGrid? We put it at the gate where Cody digs at meal time. But he dug all the gravel out.

Yes and no... We put down about 4 inches of 5/8 chip (not 5/8 minus) under the hoofgrid. We then filled the hoofgrid with more 5/8 chip. We then swept off the excess 5/8 chip and put about 2 inches of builder sand on top. We don't like the 5/8 chip in our compost. We had one horse that would dig holes, after the hoofgrid went in she tried for about 3 days then gave up.

Perhaps in your case you should install a larger section but dig in the corners so the horse can't get at the edges. At other gates in pastures and around water troughs we just filled the hoofgrid with dirt and let the grass grow through it.

It looks like you might need more gravel. Everytime I pick up poo I lose some gravel with it. It looks like I might need a ton or so as well before the end of the year. It is getting soft in one of the paddocks, but no serious mud yet. I also have to keep an eye on the gutter to make sure it is not spilling over creating more mud.
