Metro Baseball - 2013

Postby latvhoop on Mon Feb 25, 2013 7:54 pm

Reposting an edited spring training outlook for Metro baseball I seemed to have actually saved from the end of last season. Tryouts began today. Feel free to add or subtract as needed.

-Bainbridge - Graduated 8 seniors. Baseball-wise don't know what that means. Other than Vchulek (former NSBA), don't know the rest of the players, V or JV.
-Blanchet - Graduated 13 seniors from their program, including all their pitching. JV did not strike fear into the hearts of anyone. Celli Brothers and a healthy Walker Cutter will need to step it up to carry this team. Unless some pitching develops in a big way, could be a longer season, in a bad way, than usual.
-Chief Sealth - Eight seniors graduated, but returning a strong hitting core of Aiden Behar .439, Max Sarver .386, Jake Eddy .328, and Izac Bauer 24 rbi's. Pitching will need some shoring up with the staff aces gone, leaving Blaine Steele 3.21 and Marley Lucas 3.33 to pick up the slack.
-Cleveland - Baseball wasteland.
-Eastside Catholic - Lost 5 seniors, however, coming back in the hitting department are Hayden Meier .361, Jeff Kepple .358, Jeff Wells .333, and Alex Foley .295. Pitching will be a strong point again as the Crusader's return Foley 1.98, Austin Soukup 3.55, Blake Gillespie 2.53, and Travis Ulvestad 0.91.
-Franklin - No info.
-Ingraham - Most everyone returns. That includes Bryce Wilson .450, QB Trevor Fay .371, and Jacob Perrow .320. No pitching stats.
-Lakeside - No info.
-Nathan Hale - Lost six seniors, but back at the plate will be Emerson Rowe .481, Aaron Mandell .400, Julijs Pruzinskis .354, with 3 others above .300 with less games and/or AB's. On the mound return ace Pruzinskis 2.46, Rowe 3.27, and Grant Turville 3.72.
-O'Dea - Only regular from last year hitting above .300 was Pierre LeDorze at .351. While hitting had been the bread and butter for recent O'Dea teams, last year that load fell on the pitchers. In that department O'Dea returns LeDorze 0.55 and Dylan Wade 3.03.
-Rainier Beach - No info, but shares a border with Cleveland. Doubt the local Seattle rag will be bking the baseball program.
-Seattle Prep - Graduated 7 seniors. No stat info, but pitching will pretty much stay intact with Winklehake and Rogers leading the rotation.
-West Seattle - Lost 5 seniors, but have returning ace (Metro's best) Sam Hellinger, who also proved himself with the bat and LaTrey Newsome, who spent all of last season on IR.

Mountain - Balance of power will shift some in the ranks. Prep and Eastside should be the most solid and likely vie for the top spot, followed by everyone else in an 'if' bracket. Bainbridge, if they haven't lost a lot from last years team. O'Dea, if their pitching holds up and they bring along some better/more hitting. Blanchet, if there is any pitching to fill the starting roles. Lakeside, if they develop a team that can play better then the Sound to even compete in the Mountain division.

Sound - Would expect Chief Sealth, Nathan Hale, and West Seattle to stay in the top 3. You would assume Ingraham will be better next year with everyone returning, Franklin seems to have a lot of parts, but that's it - parts. If these two schools can play competitive baseball, it results in less throwaway games. Beach and Cleveland, thru no fault of the students, are baseball deserts (i.e. no LL, PONY, Dixie, Dizzy Dean, Ripken, etc. feeders).

lakeside has andrew sommerville healthy. probably the best pitcher in the state when healthy. Stanford verbal committ as jr. They will be competitive on days he pitches but not otherwise.

Blanchet lost a lot. they have a good sophomore group that will play varisty this year led by antonio hendrickson but they are a year away from competing.

odea started 6 sophomores and a freshman last year. they were very young and should be very competitive this year assuming their youngsters have devloped.

Prep brings back strong pitching staff but lost some key position players

Hale played Lakeside early in the season with Sommerville on the IR. When he came back, did he even pitch last year?
Was the Stanford offer pre-injury? Reminded of the verbal offer to Newsome at WS from UW his sophomore year?

If Sommerville is all that with pitching, it will be interesting to see how he parallels with Hellinger at WS, in my opinion the most complete pitcher in the state.

Sommerville is back and healthy. Grown a couple of inches at filled out some. An absolute beast. Stanford offer was post injury. It will be very interesting to see if he gets to Stanford. Would expect him to go very, very high in the draft. I believe Pefect Game - which is probably the bext HS/college scouting service - has him ranked at number 5 junior in the country.

As someone that recently moved to the Seattle area, what are some teams/players that are a must to check out this season?

I would check out O'Dea this season. IMO, they ar the best team in Metro. They have P/OF Pierre LeDorze who plays summer ball for Boys of Summer, and he's a stud. 225 athlete who can hit and throws in the mid-upper 80's. they have a catcher/3B, Scottie Graham (junior) who has already been offered by UW. They have a sophomore SS, Atwood who impressed down at the Oregon State University camp and is a big bodied SS who will be D1. Dylan Wade is their #2 pitcher who is a big lefty who locates the ball well. Their best catcher (can't remember his name) is a stud who plays summer ball for Chaffey. O'Dea is going to be very dangerous and I wouldn't want to play them in the state playoffs

Pitching matchups are a guessing game. If your lucky here are some pitchers to take a look at, maybe when the schools play each other they'll face off. Second pitchers listed were not at the level of their teammate last year, but otherwise can hold their own.
Eastside Catholic - Alex Foley, Austin Soukup, Lakeside - Andrew Sommerville, Nathan Hale - Julijs Pruzinskis, Emerson Rowe, O'Dea - Pierre LeDorze, Dylan Wade, Seattle Prep - Jack Rogers, Max Winklehake, West Seattle - Sam Hellinger.

The 2 EC games may be your best bet next week. EC should be one of the top teams in Metro and Ballard has a strong squad back from last year. Don't keep tabs on Skyline.

Mariner's also run the High School Classic. A fundraiser for the particular HS teams participating. Usually a quadheader or two played on a Saturday when the Mariner's are on the road. Get some good non-league matchups, games are free, and festival seating around 1st, home, and 3rd base. Can double up if it's Sounder game day.
