Spray or butter?

Postby mafeki on Wed Jan 23, 2013 8:22 pm

I'm curious do you guys prefer cooking spray for greasing up pans while cooking or do you just spread some butter on the pan? If you do use spray what kind do you prefer?

I prefer butter or I use a device called a "Misto" It's a pump up sprayer you can fill with the cooking oil of your choice. Butter has been called the "safest" fat to cook with. Yes, it's loaded with saturated fats. But it's those very sat fats that stay more stable when heated. The molecules don't "twist" into trans fats as much as other oils. It does burn at high temps though. You can make clarified butter to avoid that. If I'm using a veg oil I stay with something that has a higher smoke point, such as peanut or grapeseed oil. Stay away from the corn oil products as they are highly unstable when heated. Canola oil is not a good idea either. It may be the most processed oil out there. It's made from rapeseed oil, which is toxic until a complicated chemical refinement process is applied. It's one of those products that became popular through very creative marketing. I don't use PAM or the other sprays out there. Read the label. You may not like what's in them. There's a great book called "Fats that heal, fats that kill" by Udo Erasmus. If you're interested in what fat is doing to and for your body it's a good read.

I'm not sure whether this question falls under the rant or rave category :D , but anyway, we prefer to avoid cooking sprays of any kind. It's not only the content of the spray which worries us, but - and to a large degree - the propellant. It can't be safe. Even if PAM says "All natural", yeah, who are they kidding? )

I heard some advice about using cooking spray on rubber seals around car doors to prevent them from freezing shut. I guess that's what the spray is good for )

As for the food, traditional butter, veg or olive oil is just fine.

I looked up the Misto that things cool. Interesting to know about that Canola oil I know a lot of people that love using it for their turkey fryers. I've heard of proteins and food changing as you cook it I guess that's something Ill have to look more into.

See the reason I ask is because when watching cooking shows and just general cooking videos they often times use what looks like pam or some other cooking spray, so I was wondering since it appears to be used frequently why not ask about it. I don't know anyone who uses it so I figured maybe it was maybe a family and friend thing.

SkyOne said what I was going to suggest.
Olive oil....I use a spray at times, but now
I'm reconsidering. There are some that
say they are healthy....?
Butter! I use to use different kinds of
margarine, but not for years. Only butter
now....if i didn't have butter for some of
my cookies, they would not taste good.
And the non stick pans are a no no.
Okay, so I have two. When they are no
good anymore (scratches are dangerous),
then using my Revere Ware. Easy to
clean. Even when something sticks on
them. and they have lasted for years!

Spray only for ease but it does effect taste. It all depends on your own preference. No matter.

I've found out I'm getting lazy in my
old age!
But some sprays say they are healthy.
So was Canola oil healthy and now
they say it isn't....well, I'm still here.

In your lifetime it's at least more pure than what our children have now.
