An epic era: Crowds flock to Mission Ridge as flakes pile up
WENATCHEE — Next time you’re bombing down the Bomber Run at Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort, consider that you’re cruising through history.
The popular ski run, along with every other inch of the 6,820-foot-high ski facility, has received a near-record snowfall this season and — no surprise — near-record crowds have followed.
“We’ve had historic, near-perfect snow conditions,” said Jordan Lindstrom, the Ridge’s marketing and sales director. “Early wet snow gave us a good, solid base, and lots of powder came soon after. It’s one of the best starts since we began keeping records 42 years ago.”
Second best, in fact. Through November and December, 124 inches of snow fell at the Ridge for a 62-inch snowpack at the summit with 41 inches at the base. The only season to beat it was back in 1996-97, when 133 inches blanketed the mountain.
And it just keeps on coming. On Monday, a morning storm dumped another 4 inches on Ridge slopes with more snow forecast for Tuesday, Wednesday and the upcoming weekend.
Skiers have been quick to respond to the superb conditions and have arrived by the thousands, said Lindstrom, with daily counts outstripping projections by 32 percent. Last month, single-day skier visits peaked at 2,321 on Dec. 28, adding to the month’s total of 28,338 visits — just behind December 2007’s high count of 28,859.

Too bad Mission Ridge isn't a MAJOR ski destination so that all the airlines would fly in from around the Country but they don't have the proper runway to handle the larger jets let alone Regional Jets.

Mission won't ever be a destination resort for a reason other than air travel. Air travel from Seattle is less than an hour and Seattle is well served, so getting here isn't a problem.
The ultimate hurdle for Mission becoming a destination resort is that the land and all the land around it is government owned, so the chances of building lodging at or near the ski hill itself are pretty much nil. Without slope side accommodations, it'll never be a destination resort. Which is fine by me, of course, because its nearly a perfect place to ski and I'd like to not have lift lines double......!

Whether it's a major resort or not, I think it's a good thing people come to mountain ski despite this tough economic times and strong competition for time from work and daily routine, as well as TVs and computer games.
And I can sort of relate to what APLMAN is saying. It's a double-edge sword about any local resort becoming popular nationwide - you may not be able to enjoy it anymore

There are so many Hotel / Motel rooms in the Wenatchee Valley.

Those aren't the same as staying slop side. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mission Ridge. I wish my knees were younger so I could enjoy it more often but our home does have 3 season pass holders that get their money's worth and more out of the hill. Our driveway is only 12.2 miles from the lodge.
But without being able to have lodging on site, it'll never be a real "destination resort". That's not a slam on the hill or on ownership of Mission, it's just the way it is with the resort being on government land. If Mission were on private land, it'd have exploded a long time ago.....

Airport runway project still a go despite delays
EAST WENATCHEE — The ports of Chelan and Douglas counties are still solidly behind plans to lengthen the runway at Pangborn Memorial Airport so larger aircraft can land there.
The latest expressions of support for the $22-$30 million project come after Port of Douglas County Commissioner Jim Huffman said in a radio interview Wednesday that “the urgency for that project has diminished” amid cost increases, a slow economy and a decision by Alaska Air to hold off on a potential plan to serve Pangborn with a regional jet that would require a longer runway.
