Rant on phone scammers
Had a call the other day from a foreign speaking fellow.
Wanted to speak to my husband. Said he wasn't home,
but I would take a message. My God, he had won
5.5million dollars because the first winner didn't show up.
Said that was hard to believe and I don't think he bought
any tickets for the lottery in Dec.
He said to have him call him, gave his phone number and
said he would need a check first.
Told him I would give him the message.
Then I called the Lottery office....she said not to do it. duh!
And that they couldn't do anything but call the Att. General's
office, which I did. He said they really need the address, and
that they have caught some going to the place of the so-called
meeting to get the check....
Well, he didn't call back....was it something I said?
Okay, you can stop laughing now....they called the wrong
old gal!
Can you believe that some people fall for this? It's hard to
feel sorry for them.

I definitely feel sorry - I believe (though I can't be sure on this, might have been a CSI episode that made me think this) that many who fall victim are elderly, and whose faculties aren't what they used to be.
It's easy to feel less sorry for a nameless and faceless person.

Re: Rant on phone scammers
I feel badly as well, especially for the elderly, when they are duped into anything that would cheat them of their money or sense of security.
Last year a "law firm" made multiple phone calls to me, leaving very threatening messages that if I did not call them back a law suit would ensue and I would be left owing thousands and thousands of dollars. Each message grew increasingly angry in tone. I cannot imagine my parents or my children recieving such calls and not being thrown into a panic. For shame on anyone who tries to take advantage of ANYONE!
And Lynn? I'm glad you didn't fall for it. Someone somewhere is, or these charlatans wouldn't do what they do.

I said "it's hard to feel sorry for them".
I do feel sorry, alright...and being old,
I do understand how some aren't so
bright as before, having dementia or
just being old. Easy pickings.
We did call the police one time because
a few years ago, this fellow started
threatening me and said he would
get me pregnant, etc. Impossible,
of course, but he didn't know that.
After the policeman came and told
us what to say, if there's a next time,
no more calls.
That one was about a new car we
had won....yeah, right!
