What are charter schools?

I'm confused, charter schools are public schools held to higher standards?

My understanding is that charter schools are funded publically (through charters), open to the public (cannot charge tuition), but are led by a non-profit private board, giving them more freedom to take different chances in schools. They are not held to all the same rules and regulations that public schools are, and in turn have a goal of establishing goals and meeting the measures outline in their charter.

They do not hire union teachers as well. That should make most of you happy. While a CEO of any corporation has a contract with the board of directors; employees do not have that same right.

Thanks Alex for that explanation, as far as them not being apart of a union isn't that the norm for most government employment and non profit organizations?

I do have an issue with public money going to the private enterprises regarding education. These agencies will decide the content of what is taught. It won't be uniform and the bottom line is always looming.

I would like to see federal government butt out of schools. I truly believe that schools are in the domain of the state, and local school district.

The good news is that the teachers that stink need not apply. Their union jobs will be safe for eternity barring gross misconduct (evidently poor teaching does not fall into that category).
